The piece was published in 1989, well before Cole's 1996 book being criticized by Miller. The editor of that special issue of Soviet Psychology? Michael Cole. S. (1989). Concrete human psychology. Soviet psychology, 27(2), 53-77.

Although Miller thinks that the subject-object-mediator triangle (referenced in Engestrom 1996 and used as the "top" of Engestrom's activity system triangle) is made up of whole cloth, it appears in this publication on p.62! It is contrasted with the S1-sign-S2 triangle that Miller discusses. Here, Vygotsky is illustrating how the first triangle represents mediation of labor with a tool, directed outward -- but then the tool becomes a sign, "placed between me and my memory" (p.61). That is, Vygotsky is not just delineating between tools and signs, he is showing how one leads to another.Clay Spinuzzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13356273383001825508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33273315.post-21332650214321394602021-04-04T18:25:41.534-05:002021-04-04T18:25:41.534-05:00@Unknown You're welcome! The Wardley Maps i...Thanks for reviewing this book. The Wardley Maps is a great knowledge curation project. I recently reflected on my own knowledge curation work on Activity Theory and my own theoretical making work on Platform Ecology. I found there are three movements for connecting Theory and Practice.

1.Practice-based reflection.
2.Theory-based reflection.
3.Theory-practice dialogue.

The theory-based reflection means adopting theoretical concepts to reflect on practical experience while the practice-based reflection means using cases from the real world to reflect on theoretical concepts. Furthermore, the most important movement is the dialogue between two types of reflections. This third movement makes a creative space with a potential hierarchical loop: reflection — dialogue.

Diagramming is a great way of thinking, however, it would be better if we can think with both diagram and theoretical concepts. If we only use the Engeström’s Triangle without understanding theoretical concepts behind the diagram, we lose the opportunity of deep learning by theory-based reflection. But Anton Yasnitsky asserts in his biography of Vygotsky that this book wasn't published until long after Vygotsky's death, in 1960! In a personal communication (July 1, 2019) he notes that the title repeats the first words of the text and suggests that it was an unpublished manuscript up to that point, a manuscript that repeats the structure of LSV's 1929 paper -- which I think was the basis for the paper in the 1966 volume mentioned in the review above.

Yasnitsky also believes that HMF is a "terminological fake" since LSV insisted on the term "psychological functions" rather than "psychical" (= "mental").

The additional chapters (beyond the first 5) didn't come out until the CW in 1982-1984; Yasnitsky believes that they are from an earlier work.

Thanks as always to Yasnitsky for investigating the tangled publication history of these writings!Clay Spinuzzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13356273383001825508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33273315.post-49888215242580838592019-03-27T10:22:57.960-05:002019-03-27T10:22:57.960-05:00Looks like I have a book to buy. It meant something different at that time -- when Nordics, Alpines, and Mediterraneans referred to different racial groups, racial meaning a group that was seen as having distinctive physical, mental, and even moral characteristics, largely inherited and fixed, though Anglo-Saxon progressives in the U.S. felt that the groups could be melded, with the inferior (Alpine and Mediterranean) acquiring the superior characteristics of the Nordics. In this sense, Italians, Poles, Greeks, etc., "became white," but only because "whiteness" itself changed. It is interesting stuff. I'm currently reading another volume of the CW with some undated, unpublished texts from his later holistic period. These rethink his HMF argument in really interesting ways. Luria more or less continues this line of thinking in his neuropsychology books, but never with the same freedom of exploration that Vygotsky had.
