Slashdot links to a WSJ story about how a Marine officer connected with others to develop and produce an insurgent-identification handheld in 30 days -- beating a Pentagon development project that had been going on for two years.

Just had a student conference with a gaurdsman who created his own equipment program in Iraq via dumpster diving. Every Friday he and his men would salvage body armor, etc. from what the rotating soldiers would throw away. He and his men filled two trailers and help equip the new soldiers. Not sanctioned at all. Distributed intelligence...
